Stimulated by the coastline around West Cornwall, MICHAEL SHEPPARD’s oil paintings capture the flash of sunlight on rock or wave that illuminates a moment in the open air. Abstract though his interpretation of landscape is, a sense of place feeds the imagination and leads one into the special atmosphere of the Penwith peninsula. Through underpainting and scumbling techniques, Michael achieves many unusual and subtle colour tones – and a luminosity which defies definition.
