ANDREW HARDING’s paintings express his joy in the transient life of flowers. He evokes a sense of poignancy by capturing the moment just before they fade or fall. He paints with vigour and spontaneity, filling the canvas with impasto strokes of oil paint or merely leaving a few outlines to suggest his subject, whether flowers or fruit; both approaches being equally evocative.

CRAIG UNDERHILL’s slab-built vessels seem to emerge out of the land itself. The ancient sites which blend into the moors of Penwith inform his decoration and even the texture of his pots. Their matt surfaces and uneven edges give a weathered, obdurate appearance, as reflected in this landscape.

Love and companionship are the expressions of joy in HELEN MARTINO’s ceramic sculpture. By cutting and moulding stoneware clay sheets, she creates figures nestling into their surroundings with expressive hands and feet, relaxed and amiable, their features painted with delicacy and precision. From an earlier career as a functional potter, Helen turned towards her current genre of narrative sculpture after being inspired by John Maltby’s slab-building courses at Aberystwyth University.

ROBERT RACE’s toys and automata have been exhibited and enjoyed for many a long year – so we are delighted to be showing them here, as truly fitting for an exhibition about JOY! This year he was awarded a gold medal at the renowned ‘Heim und Handwerk’ exhibition in Munich, where he has previously been selected to exhibit. Robert started off making dolls houses and painted toys which led on to a fascination with automata. Recycled materials and driftwood form the basis of his work but the complex mechanisms to initiate the movement take an engineer’s mind.
