As a Shetlander, ALEX MALCOLMSON learned the lore of the sea and all things maritime from a young age. A Fine Art degree at Edinburgh College of Art, as well as his love of Folk Art led to his current multi-disciplinary work where carving, modelling, wood construction and painting result in life-sized sea birds, intricate framed tableaux with a narrative content and carvings combined with found objects – a constant source of fascination.

TERRY SHONE, another Northerner, brings a sparkling new image to the tradition of Staffordshire figurines and ‘flatbacks’. With more than a touch of humour, Terry portrays proud greyhounds, snooty tigers, self-possessed cats and birds in bowers with grace and dexterity in his handling of the clay and painted decoration. A graduate of Leeds College of Art and Goldsmiths, London, Terry has been a practising potter for many years and it is only in the last few years that he has concentrated entirely on modelling in this way.

Erstwhile a stained glass artist, ROBINA JACK has adapted to perfection a similar use of pattern and imagery in the earthenware bowls and platters which she now decorates with slips in singing colours. Living near the Essex marshes, she draws her motifs from her love of sea-faring, birds, flowers and domestic creatures, frequently expressing their playful nature.

Making pots for the table forms a major part of DAVID GARLAND’s production, alongside his special one-off studio ceramics which have earned him many prestigious solo shows over the years. The shapes of his pots are distinctly his own, as are the often unusual colours and distinctive, painterly decoration. Equally attractive displayed on shelves or in use on the table, David’s pots have become as collectable as the studio work.

GUY ROYLE etches, incises, inlays and carves precious metals and semi-precious stones to create silver and gold jewellery which is bold in scale and presence. His necklaces are rich with amethyst, carnelian, aquamarine and many-hued agates, linked by beads of gold or silver. Essentially contemporary in style, albeit with echoes of a distant past, Guy’s jewellery displays the hand of a fine craftsman – justly recognised by his many collectors.

Recognised as one of Britain’s finest ceramic artists, JOHN MALTBY speaks with a lone voice. The sculptures he has been making these past 19 years are as original and individual as were the vessel forms he made hitherto. Now in his 82nd year, John is slowing down BUT cannot resist the ideas that still come to him and demand to be translated into clay – so we are hoping to continue showing his inimitable work for a good while to come!
