Painting was a lifelong passion for CAROLYN WHITE ever since she graduated from Chelsea and Kingston Colleges of Art in the late ‘60s. Her work made powerful and evocative use of colour and she was fascinated by the patterns created by nature in the landscape. Living in the Cotswolds, her spirit yearned also for the sea and in this, Cornwall became her focus. Long periods annually were spent on the Penwith peninsula where she ‘caught the moment’ in pastel, watercolour and oils.
Carolyn died in 2013. At her request, proceeds from the sale of her paintings go to the Sue Ryder Hospice in Cheltenham.

A descendant of four generations of watercolourists, JENNY RYRIE echoes her forbears in the recognition she has received for her painting. An M.A. at Edinburgh College of Art in 1980 led to many solo exhibitions before she embarked on travels to America and New Mexico, finding delight in such different terrain. Now, however, West Cornwall is a constant source of subjects for Jenny in all its weather and moods, well suited to the fluid intuitive style of her semi-abstract landscapes.

Fascinated by tiny sea creatures and rock-pool dwellers, JILL FANSHAWE KATO decorates her hand built jugs and vessels with a variety of motifs, some naturalistic, some transformed into abstract pattern. An internationally renowned ceramicist, she regularly exhibits in Japan where she has worked closely with Japanese masters over the years.

Well-known to followers of Yew Tree Gallery, ROBINA JACK springs constant surprises in her use of new materials. Her ceramic bowls and platters express to perfection her talent for pattern and imagery, painted with slips in singing colours. Adding to her repertoire, she now also paints on old wooden panels. Living near the Essex marshes, she draws her motifs from her love of sea-faring, birds, flowers and animals, frequently expressing their playful nature.

ESTHER SMITH is a jeweller and automata maker, having trained at Birmingham School of Jewellery. In both she aims to ‘capture tiny moments from life’, which are often humorous or reflect dreams and aspirations. The automata are made from patinated brass and copper, embellished with metal leaf. Among her latest work are some tableaux, constructed in the same way as the automata. Her jewellery is worked mainly in silver, with semi-precious stones.

GINA COWEN has an amazing talent for transforming sea-tumbled glass into glowing new life ~ creating rings, necklaces and earrings combined with silver and gold. She seeks out glass of unusual colours, some derived from the spoil of C19th glass works on the North East coast, some from ancient wrecked vessels around the Scillies. Her silver-and gold-smithing skills were acquired at Sir John Cass College and Camberwell College of Art.

He also makes silver and gold chains in a variety of interesting designs, using traditional silver-smithing tools. MELVYN EVANS’ prints cross over between figurative and abstract as he explores the connection between fluid shape, form and static imagery. His lino-cuts follow a coastal route around Britain, recording vignettes of life in working ports and clifftops. A Degree in Illustration at Exeter College of Art led to Printmaking tuition at the Royal College of Art, instigating a career in both since 1992.

Working in a disused stone quarry surrounded by wildlife, HELEN NOCK creates most of her outdoor sculptures, tables and birdbaths from reclaimed slate, inlaid with stained glass and sometimes small pebbles or beachcombed objects. Inspired by ancient standing stones – especially those that emerged during the crossover from Paganism to Christianity, her three tall structures on the lawn are based on Sun Worship. The glass apertures are at eye level and glow with unexpected luminosity at the right angle to the sun. Working in tune with nature, Helen favours slower hand-driven methods of working rather than modern technologies.

These images are merely a selection of the exhibits in WILD SHORES, CALM HAVENS,
so I hope you have the opportunity to come and see it all for yourselves one day soon!
We open from Tuesdays to Saturdays 10.30am to 5p.m. until 25th October, and thereafter for a while longer – though it is always safest to ring or email Gilly after the end date to check on opening hours.
We are continuing to support the NOMAD RETURN PROJECT through commission on sales and donations from visitors to fund a pregnant Dri (female Yak) via the Charity ‘Heart of Asia’. This will enable another Nomad Tibetan family to return to their time-honoured way of life and self-sufficiency in the high reaches of the Eastern Himalayas.
