A contemporary artist-designer par excellence, MARK HEARLD continues to explore new avenues in the arts. This year he has extended his skills to designing handbags for Moynat, Paris, silk scarves for A State of Nature and applying his imagery and decoration to a large collection of dishes and vase forms thrown for him by potter Debbie Prosser. His book ‘Raucous Invention’ continues to be a best seller – and of course his innovative and imaginative collages are constantly sought after! This exhibition displays a new collection of collages/paintings alongside the slipware ceramics.

ALEX MALCOLMSON’s carved seabirds and mixed media boxworks are a reflection of life on the Shetlands where he grew up. Familiarity with the sea and wildlife in all its aspects gives him the empathy to convey the pure essence of his subjects with total confidence. His maritime framed works suggest intriguing histories of life at sea. Alex exhibits regularly at the Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh and has recently shown at Sea Winds in his home town of Lerwick to mark the Tall Ships race from Shetland to Norway.

From her stained glass making days ROBINA JACK has adapted to perfection the use of pattern and imagery in the earthenware bowls and platters which she decorates with slips in singing colours. She draws on animals and birds currently in decline for much of her subjects, as well as the sea and marsh birds near her home on the Essex marshes. Early maritime art is another of her fascinations, so masted schooners often contribute to the narrative element within her work.

ANGELA HARDING

ANGELA HARDING is a printmaker of long-standing, whose name has become well-known through her book cover for ‘The Saltpath’ by Raynor Winn and many others, her own books among them. Her most recent literary venture, in collaboration with Isabella Tree, is a large-format illustrated version of ‘Wilding’ - the story of the Knepp farm transformation. In her printmaking, Angela often combines linocut with silkcreen, resulting in strong linear work with delicate colour. Her love and knowledge of wildlife, birds in particular, are a constant source of material.

TERRY SHONE has developed his unique ceramic style after a lifelong interest in traditional slip-wares and the lively images of C19th Staffordshire flatbacks. Wild and domestic animals   pose proudly as if in a Victorian photograph – albeit in a contemporary interpretation. The slab-built, modelled forms are decorated with coloured slips and glazes, frequently reworked over several firings with enamels and lustres.

Working with several carats and colours of gold combined with silver, CHARMIAN HARRIS creates a broad variety of rings, necklaces, earrings and brooches at her studio in Devon. Stones sourced from all over the world, river pebbles and sea-glass are cut into shapes dictated by her designs – often featuring wild animals and birds. Sometimes described as ‘funky’, each piece reflects her lively imagination and her skilful artistry. She regularly exhibits at Goldsmiths Hall, London.

KAREN WILLIAMS

Soon after qualifying in Fine Art Sculpture in 1982, KAREN WILLIAMS moved to Japan for 3 years where she studied Shodo (Japanese calligraphy) whilst teaching English. This discipline encouraged her move to work with red earthenware in the slipware tradition but with the cultural slant of Japan entering her designs and decoration. Hand building with slabs, or pinching the soft clay gives her scope to develop interesting shapes and edging to her bowls and platters before pouring the slip, through which she makes the sgraffito ‘drawings’. Her inspiration comes from nature and the wild landscape around her Pembrokeshire home.

GINA COWEN

GINA COWEN’s sea-glass jewellery has been a firm favourite at the gallery over many years. Her new collection includes spectacular rope necklaces, made from semi-precious stones and Baroque pearls combined with the sea-glass for which she is so renowned. Gathered from shores far and wide, shaped by the sea, the glass comes in many colours and glows with luminosity. One of her benchmarks is the delicate shape of silver swan-neck hooks which are so gracefully in tune with the suspended sea-glass drops. Here is a selection:

GUY ROYLE etches, incises and carves gold and silver and semi-precious stones to create jewellery which is bold in scale and presence. His necklaces are rich with amethyst, carnelian, lapis lazuli and many-hued agates linked by silver beads. The 18ct gold and silver brooches often depict birds in flight or swimming fish – each piece worked by hand with simple metal-smithing tools. Essentially contemporary in style, Guy’s jewellery is redolent of a distant past and displays the mark of a fine craftsman, justly recognised by his many collectors.

In the walled garden, REECE INGRAM’s upstanding Hare reigns supreme, a sculpture in Ancaster stone, titled ‘And he saw it was very good’ looking towards a sheltering Seal, also in Ancaster stone.

Another integral part of this CALL OF THE WILD exhibition is sharing the experience of observing – through two organised walks – the transformation of farm land at Keigwin into a haven for wildlife as well as productively making a living through farming organically. Here are the details:

Torr Helyk*

The Guy family invite you to explore the richness of our landscape through farming with wildlife at Lower and Higher Keigwin Farm. Lisa Guy will walk with you through fields up to the moors where their ponies graze and down to Rose valley where ancient habitats have been revealed, visiting a restored spring and a living labyrinth on the way, and finishing with a cream tea in the woodlands.

Parking is at Lower Keigwin, immediately behind the gallery, where Lisa will meet everyone at 2pm. The gentle walk, with several pauses to look in detail at various habitats, will take about 2 hours. Price £8 each.

*Torr Helyk is Cornish for ‘where their ponies and cows graze’
