Age-old respect for trees is gaining even more credence now as scientific studies reveal mycorrhizal networks underground showing their interconnectedness and their sentient nature.

Leading artists working in a variety of ways express the many attributes of trees and how they affect all life on earth. Their own interpretations are shown in paintings, wood-engravings, textiles, wood carvings & turned wood, willow work, ceramics, sculpture, papier maché, photomontages, automata and jewellery.

JESSIE ANN MATTHEW is a painter, photographer and textile artist living in Scotland. She paints within the landscape, often the immediate surroundings of her home in East Lothian.  Her fluid technique in oils or watercolour capture the fleeting movements of trees in winter, spring and summer, conveying the essence of their durability in all weathers.

JONATHAN GIBBS

A wood-engraver of repute, JONATHAN GIBBS uses recurring images of trees and life within them, together with shifting shapes balanced by harmonic lines, demonstrating his skill as a graphic artist, fine artist and illustrator. He sources box, holly, pear, maple, whitebeam, lemonwood and laburnum for his woodblocks and prints the image on Japanese paper.

ALISON ORCHARD paints directly from the landscape, often among woodlands near her Hampshire home. Her broad gestural strokes of paint and layers of glazed colour result in an impressionist vision as she interprets the play of light and shade among trees and the forest floor. As she says, “The end result is her reaction to the landscape, expressing humility and wonder at the overwhelming forces of nature.’

Harrow trained JAMES BURNETT-STUART’s Pottery in the depths of the Herefordshire countryside provides plenty of inspiration for the leaf and plant motifs decorating his slipware pots.  Thrown on the wheel then hand altered, he coats the red earthenware clay with a light slip before applying the colourful design and patterned borders to the dishes & mugs.

KIRSTEN GLASBROOK

The Danish weaver KIRSTEN GLASBROOK has been working at her loom for many months to create this wall-hung tapestry of a Tree of Life – the ultimate manifestation of the majesty and wonder of trees.  Using hand-dyed nettle yarn which grows in the mountains of Nepal, she incorporates images of seeds, leaves and creatures as symbols of fruitful life.

HERBIE GIRARDET is an international ecologist, film-maker and writer of many books on the greening of cities and the essential role of trees in sustaining life on earth. In recent years he has discovered a love of wood carving. Some of the subjects of his lime wood reliefs are inspired by mediaeval stone carvings – and always linked to trees.

LESLEY BIRCH reveals a more abstract view of the trees of woodland and forest in her oil painting on wood panels.  Taking inspiration from recent visits to the lake District and Westonbirt Arboretum, she creates pattern from tree trunks and the line of twigs interspersed with sky and foliage, often using lush thick paint with a palette knife. She aims to convey that element of mystery one finds within a forest space.

LIN and JAMIE LOVEKIN

LIN and JAMIE LOVEKIN live and work on a smallholding nestling in a wooded Cornish valley.

Jamie sources locally grown hardwoods to turn his tableware, sometimes using green wood which distorts into pleasing organic forms. Lin grows her own many-coloured willow trees which she coppices to produce the long supple branches from which she weaves baskets – in great variety. From shopping baskets to lampshades, flower vases to rucksacks, her imagination and deft weaving techniques result in a wide range of fascinating and practical items.

CLAIRE GILL

Sussex based CLAIRE GILL has an unusual method of printmaking.  Using a collage approach, she digitally combines photographs of different locations with mark-making to create images filled with memories and connections to the environment beyond the scope of a single photograph. This results in a semi-abstract original print resembling a painting. All images are 34 x 34cm, printed on  archival cotton rag paper with UV resistant pigment inks.

RUSSELL GEORGE WILSON

All RUSSELL GEORGE WILSON’s work stems from his deep love of nature and the natural world. He trained in Graphic Design and initially worked as an illustrator before becoming a full-time artist, embracing the different mediums of painting, clay modelling and felted bird sculptures.  His subjects arise from daily walks in his native Derbyshire.  In his studio he paints from memory, recalling the essence of a place – often changed through recollection, which results in a personal and unique portrayal.

Millinery is LOU POCOCK’s main profession.  Her hats are frequently adorned with textile flowers made from painted silk, felt, leather and feathers, and this skill she has turned into creating brooches in a similar way.  Using traditional techniques, she combines these with contemporary approaches, resulting in sustainable, lifelike, fantastical or stylised designs.

Imagery for ELAINE DAY’s silver jewellery arises from her close observation of small woodland animals and birds as well as the wild plants underfoot. Living in the rural Cotswolds she is able to walk out into the local landscape, making sketches along the way of likely subjects for transforming into rings, pendants, earrings and brooches.

KAREN WILLIAMS

KAREN WILLIAMS of ADRIFT POTTERY decorates her slipware vessels with calligraphic delicacy, depicting birds among trees and other natural habitats around her home on the Pembrokeshire coast. This style of making sgraffito designs through a slip base on earthenware pots arose from her studies of Japanese calligraphy whilst working in Japan.  Hand building gives her scope to create very individual shapes and rims, making each piece unique.

KRISTY WYATT SMITH

KRISTY WYATT SMITH had a successful career as an automata maker for over a decade, selected for many prestigious exhibitions in this country and abroad, until her love of plants and design encouraged her to retrain in garden design, which she now practises full-time.  Her imaginative automata are made from recycled tin and wood, often incorporating a cupboard or chair, making them practical as well as decorative.

HELEN NOCK

Working in Somerset, HELEN NOCK creates most of her outdoor sculptures, tables and birdbaths from reclaimed slate from local and Cornish yards. Into and around them she inlays sea-worn glass, pottery and pebbles, often using the motif of a bird in flight.  She also designs upright sculptures on steel stakes to place among garden foliage, either abstract or bird forms,  and within these she inlays stained or hand-made Smalti glass to reflect the sunlight.
